Along with domain names, content and graphic design, web hosting is one of the main aspects that one needs to think about when deciding to create a website. This question holds many factors in and of itself as there are several types of hosting services corresponding to different needs and budgets.
What is web hosting?
In a nutshell, web hosting consists in hosting a website on one or more servers. This makes the website constantly accessible to visitors. Hosts own the servers and they rent out the space.
The website’s data is regrouped and split into files that are placed on the server. This data (html and CSS) is then interpreted and translated by the navigators used by people visiting the site.
There are several types of hosting, each one having their own pros and cons. The most important aspect is to have access to a lot of bandwidth.
The different types of web hosting
There are several types of hosting services for websites. In general, hosts charge monthly fees. As you will see in the following paragraphs, these prices can vary enormously. The choice must be done in concordance with the needs of each person.
Those that are looking for an affordable hosting service will opt for shared hosting. This type of hosting consists in sharing the server’s space amongst several websites. The fees are then divided between the lot (which can contain hundreds of websites), which makes it so that the host can charge 5$ to 10$ per month.
However economical, this option unfortunately comes with a few drawbacks. Since the server’s resources are being shared amongst several dozens, even hundreds of websites, this can lead to problems. For example, if one of the websites gets a surge of visitors at one specific moment, the other sites will be affected.
For those that are not preoccupied by download speed, this type of hosting can still be worthwhile. In any case, it is always possible to change hosting services later on to opt for another format if circumstances change (increase in traffic, size of the website).
VPS hosting is similar to shared hosting. The space on the server is also shared amongst several sites. However, in this case this usually amounts to approximately 20 websites. Moreover, the sites all get the same share in terms of available memory, which avoids problems with websites slowing down as a result of other sites on the same server.
Hosts that offer this type of service often propose other options in relation to the website’s configuration, which can be very advantageous. In terms of price, VPS hosting usually costs a minimum of $80 per month, with maximum prices reaching $450.
It is also possible to host one website per server. This is called dedicated hosting. This type of hosting is particularly recommended for websites that get a lot of visitors. It also offers better protection against hacker attacks. Dedicated hosting usually starts at $125 per month.
However, it should be noted that certain forms of VPS hosting can surpass the performance of dedicated hosting. These are of course the more expensive and sophisticated forms of VPS hosting.
What about free web hosting options?
Indeed, it is possible to host your website for free. However, the host will place advertisements on the website to compensate.
How to find a web host for your website?
One’s first instinct would be to head to a search engine. This brings us to a sea of options, where it can be hard to pick out the good ones. With a service like B2BQuotes, you will be put in contact with companies that offer hosting. They will have been through a verification process and will benefit from a good reputation. Once the project has been sent to them, they will contact you to discuss the project.
